Translation
A PERSON IN AN OFFICIAL STATE OF DISGRACE MAY NOT PERFORM MILITARY SERVICE. A war hero fell into the hands of pirates. He wrote back to his native land about ransom. While the state dallied, the manager of a troop of gladiators paid his price and then, in the arena, gave him the wooden sword of discharge. When war time returned the commanding general officially summoned him to military service.
